Robert ‘Bob’ Main

It is very sad to announce the untimely passing of Robert ‘Bob’ Main after a short period of illness. Bob was instrumental in developing many players to play for Newport RFC, he helped Coach the Youth team in the late 80’s to early 90’s along with Dai Larner and Nigel Webb. The team won the South Mon Cup on numerous occasions. Many 1st XV players played for the Youth under Bobs guidance, notably John Reid, Ian McKim and Gary Hicks to name just a few.
Paul Corten Captain of the Youth team in 1988/89 recalls happy times with Bob as Coach where he organised for the team to join in the Charity Chariot race that regularly happened in Caerleon…The boys pulling Bob around the village on a chariot, then retiring to his pub The Goldcroft for a beer or two! Chris Wyatt and Richard Smith both went on to win international honours after playing for Newport Youth under Bob’s guidance.
“Bob was a major part of my rugby education supplying the skills , mindset and the values needed to progress both on the field and in everyday life. He was adored by all who played under him and he will be missed by all who knew him. RIP coach “ – Chris Wyatt
We know that Bob’s family was very dear to him, we send them and his friends our deepest condolences at this very sad time….RIP Bob x
